Quick Sketch

Wanted to give the mod projects a break and get started on an idea I've had milling around for a while now. This will hopefully be 1 of 2 personal illustrations I complete before heading back for my final term this summer. The primary goal I have for this piece is executing multiple light sources coupled with multiple figures.

I took some time to sit down and watch Dave Finches dynamic figure drawing workshop before starting this. He has a nice loose approach to quick sketching that I'd like to get more in tune with. Definitely helped to get some of these basic block in's started.

Thanks for checking! Should have an environment to post soon for the Sprawl team ;) They're doing some nice work getting multiple assets together in tandem so we'll see how the rest of the artwork comes together in the coming weeks.

Sarah Full Ortho (Almost)

Ahhhhhhhh! Almost there. This whole process has really taught me a lot about design coordination and time management. I definitely need to get more structured lines out of my sketches so I don't save ALL the functionality questions to be answered in the final stages of development.

Still missing her headset. I think what I;m gonna end up doing is a full callout sheet with facial expressions and prop designs, because those seem to be the two areas that are lacking in these static poses.

Sarah: Front/Back Orthos

Man, this got more intense than I expected. It's one thing to quickly sketch out a design from one angle. It's entirely different to make it WORK in the round. No place to hide your flaws. LIKE FACES FOR EXAMPLE!!

Just the front and back for now. Should finish up the side views by tomorrow. Then i can move onto James. Damn, i had expected both of their turns to be done by today :/

Ortho Update

Didn't get as much time to work on this as I thought I would. I want to get the rest finished by today. Night All!!

Quick Update

Quite busy, so only spent 45 minutes on this today. Messed with the design a bit on James. Still not quite at a finished stage, but close, i suppose. I thought these lines might be too-too loose to start the orthos, but now I'm starting to think i can do cleanup AND the turn in one go. Need more curves on Sarah's chest plate. Bit too flat.

I was also hoping to have these fully rendered BEFORE jumping into the turn, but I see now that the lines are more important than the color to get the modelers off the ground, so we'll save that for later. There will be 5 human characters in total, so I might just do a full illustration showing all of them interacting with one another instead of rendering each character in an individual composition..

Sarah and James

A few early character designs for the FUBAR mod team. Started with some quick thumbnails to establish gesture before scanning and laying down loose strokes on top. Still not happy with his face, but we'll revisit that for the final render. Both characters sketched today.

Summer Break Sketchcapades!!

FINALLY!! Some time to focus on personal work. I have the next 3 weeks off from school and will be devoting nearly every minute of it to portfolio work. I just got hooked up with a mod group and should be posting the first round of characters by the end of the week. I'd also like to re-visit a few of my pieces from this past semester and bring them up to par with the rest of my work. On top of that the album commission that's been in the works for over a year now is finally shedding some light at the end of the tunnel, right as a new tee-shirt co. and photography studio logo project make their way into my free time. So hopefully if all goes well, I can get through everything mentioned and still have time leftover for 2 brand new illustrations before summer terms starts!!

In the meantime, here'a a new self portrait/DA i.d. I actually started the base for this in Painter a few months ago. Finished up finals today and decided to knock out the rest this afternoon. A few hours total. Video Time lapse can be seen here:
